The best jazz band in New Orleans
I have been in New Orleans, but I have never seen a band with the energy of New Orleans Jazz Vipers!!! Not since Kermit Ruffins at Vaughns! I used to live in New Orleans in 1995 when I had a short stint of street performing when Tuba Fats was still alive. There was a little band that was forming called, "The Dauphine Street Swingers." I sang with them a few times...the saxophone player was sweet and had a twinkle in his eye. He had learned the sax from many years of playing in the New York subways...he was self taught, he said. Now, he was in New Orleans...he made it his home.
I have since left, and have not focussed on music as they have. I came back to see them...and I was so impressed with their growth as musicians...John Rodli and Joe Braun were my friends and the original players. They were still budding almost ten years before...now they are bursting with music...
Joe Braun's phrasing is impeccable, John's smooth singing and Django-like guitar playing is amazing. Their whole personas and level of skill go straight to the giants in which they emulate...and I would say they even surpass them to go into their own realm...Cab Calloway, Ellington, Django. There are impromptu trumpet players, swing dancers...and other budding musicians are welcome to join. They have made Frenchman Street into what the French Quarter used to be before street performing became illegal after 8:30...an incredible, good-feeling get together where every one is happy, smiling, and listeners are tickled by what rare sounds are being brought to their ears...into their hearts.
Check their websites for gigs...but they really rock the house at the Spotted Cat 623 frenchman
every Monday and friday 10PM--2:00AM.
But get there early to snag a good place to watch...it fills up with a mostly local crowd that has come to love and appreciate the sounds of the New Orleans Jazz Vipers.
your biggest fan,
Shannon
