Italian with a twist of Creole
Not being a fan of Italian food, I actually ate a late lunch before joining the group for our NOLA Eats dinner at Nardo's. It was my first time dining there, and was a bit surprised to pull up and see the shabby exterior, complete with Coca-Cola sign above the door. However, as I stepped inside, we were seated in a nice dining room that wasn't too cramped for it's small size. The downstairs level seems a bit more casual, as there is a bar down there, as well. If you are looking for something a little quieter, ask to be sat upstairs. Unfortunately, there was a window unit placed above a door toward the end of our table and it was rather chilly. However, when we mentioned it to our server, she snapped it off for us for a while.
As I looked over the single-sheet, laminated menu, I was a bit disappointed with the selections. The server came by and told us about the specials of the evening, and I forgot all about that tiny, boring thing. I ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer (wow!) and a grouper dish for my entree (very, very good). Robert ordered a calamari appetizer, and this thing was HUGE! The wines I ordered (white: Turnbull sauvignon blanc, red: Mmm, I forget) were delicious and complimented both dishes well. For dessert, I ordered the creme brulee, which was served in a cup rather than a ramekin, and had more of a "soft serve" consistency, we decided. Creme brulee is my all-time favorite dessert, but I think I'll try something different next time.
The hostess was very friendly and accommodating with my gift certificate purchase (congrats to Kelly!), getting me everything I needed for the gift certificate drawing. Service was friendly, prompt and even a bit laid back, which was nice. She even gave us separate checks for a party of seven.
Entrees are in the $14-$20 range, wines by the glass about $7-$10. Since I can't really hold my liquor these days, I had to pass on their selection of port (!!!), but I'll be certain to skip a glass of wine with my dinner so I can partake in some port goodness.
I'll definitely go back to Nardo's, but I'm going to have to call ahead and make sure they have the fried green tomatoes on the menu! Damn, they were good.
