Cafe East - Asian fusion in Metairie, Louisiana
Looking for great Asian cuisine with a twist? I have to recommend Cafe East located in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. The presentation of the food is beautiful, the ingredients are high quality and fresh. And can you say "affordable"? The more traditional entrees, such as orange peel beef, are priced almost economically. The Chef's Recommendations are in the $12-$18 range. There is something for everybody on the menu, even the pickiest of eaters. For dessert, don't forget to try the flourless chocolate torte - to die for and presented in a manner you would expect by any renowned restaurant in New Orleans.

The only problem I had with the restaurant was the service. Okay, to say "problem" is being dramatic, but I definitely got the "chop" service. During my recent visit to Cafe East, my dining companions and I wanted to order apps before we selected the wine, and the waiter kept pestering us for our orders...on everything. Also, the only recommendations I noticed that he made were for the priciest items. It really made him look desperate. We ordered three appetizers and wanted to enjoy the wine (the wine list has a few winners on it), but weren't even finished when the runner came with our entrees. He then proceeded to try to make room on the table for them, pushing our app plates around. I was a bit frustrated with this. His solution was to take the food back to the kitchen. Gee, thanks guy. Now my entree will be cold when I get it. Fortunately, with three people eating the apps, we didn't wait too much longer and had our dinner brought out. Although quite knowledgeable, I think our server was too over-the-top at first and then we hardly saw him toward the end of the meal. However, I cannot say that we received "bad" service, just not very good.

Overall, the food is delicious, the decor and ambiance is beautiful (think sophisticated decor in a two-story building, ever-changing colored lights and a soundtrack of trip-hop/ambient music) and the service is decent. I think if management played a bigger part in the restaurant and spent more time training their staff, Metairie could have a new 4-star restaurant. They certainly have a 5-star chef. - Leslie , posted 07/07/04
